What is upholstery?

Upholstery is typically the work of offering furniture, particularly the seats with springs, padding, webbing, leather or fabric covers. The term ‘upholstery’ is applicable to automobile, domestic, airplane & boat furniture and can even be applied to mattresses, especially the upper layers, though these differ in design significantly.

Kinds of upholstery

There are different kinds of upholstery – traditional, automobile, commercial and marine.

Traditional upholstery is generally a craft, which dates back centuries. It is a method of upholstering furniture making use of traditional materials and methods. It uses horsehair, springs, webbings, cotton linters and jute scrim for upholstering furniture.

Commercial upholstery is a kind of upholstery work that’s done for businesses. Examples include restaurant seating that consists of booth seats, bar stools, dining room chairs etc. Upholstery work done for chairs and tables in hospitals are also included in commercial upholstery.

There are many people who think auto upholstery strictly refers to the seats within vehicle. However, this isn’t the case. The materials that are used for upholstery work include staples, zippers, tacks and buttons.

Choosing upholstery fabric

Several things need to be kept in mind while choosing upholstery fabric. They include factors like durability, style, colour, fade resistance, mildew resistance, allergies etc. For instance, when considering the durability, two important things needs to be kept in mind – the area where the upholstery fabric is to be used and who are to use it. Then again, when considering the colour, the most vital thing that needs to be kept in mind during automobile, marine or furniture upholstery in Sydney is the other interiors.
